Here's a photo of the shale on a freshwater lake in Maine. Lots of fossils can be found here including trilobites, bivalves and brachiopods, and coral rugosa. I think I've also found some tube like impressions that could be either plants or snakes.

If you look carefully below, and magnify the photo, you'll see some fossils just begging to be picked up!
